FINISH THE PLOT LINE - ADD TWO OR THREE EVENTS FOR THE MANUSCRIPT AND THE EPILOGUE!
IDENTIFY THE EVENT THAT YOU THINK IS THE CLIMAX!
DUE MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15.
11/2/10
Setting
The time setting would be 1939, before World War II, around fall time. The main place this story takes place at is Indian Island just off the coast of Devon. (in England)
Chapter 1
With a mysterious letter in their memory (or hand), several people looking for a relaxing stay at a beautiful mansion make their way to Devon in all forms of transportation.
Some suspicious confrontations have happened on the ride to get to Devon, and many people have been invited to the island under different circumstances.
Chapter 2
A handful of the chosen "victims" are greeted by Fred Narracott (man who drives supplies to island) who gladly takes them over to Indian Island, but what they don't know is that they are going to be someone's prey.
Once all ten nervous people get acquainted with each other, they are left to wonder why their hosts left them alone with no way to leave the island
Chapter 3
After just eating dinner, everyone seems to notice ten glass indians on the table and thinks they are very clever, but they don't really know what they symbolize.
Suddenly a booming voice played on a gramophone announced each of the ten persons names and said who the person was responsible for killing.
Chapter 4
After just finding out Mr. Owen, could really be someone "unknown," everyone is having a fit, but also want a chance to prove they are innocent.
Mostly everyone admits it isn't their fault, but a few don't seem to hide the fact that they really did kill someone.
Before everyones' eyes Tony Marston chokes on his alcoholic drink and dies.
Chapter 5
Puzzlement fills the room as everyone is trying to figure out how a man so young and handsome could die just by drinking.
Bedtime allowed some people to think about their crime... no regret, sorrow, loneliness, and revenge
Chapter 6
There was excitement of getting off of the island the next day, the only problem is that the boat never showed.
Mrs. Rogers, with ghostly pail skin, was found dead in her bed.
Eight Indians were found on the dinner table by Mr. Rogers. This could only mean one thing... there are more naughty Indians that need to go.
Hanna- Quality work. Summaries are thorough and give insights into the plot line. Mrs. M
Chapter 7
Emily Brent reveals that the pregnant girls who she was to look after, drowned herself, and she had nothing to do with it. This left Vera shocked and scared that an old women would let something like that happen.
Lombard and Armstrong start scheming to secretly search the Island (all of the nooks and crannies). You never know where the killer could be hiding.
Chapter 8
Blore decided to go out with Lombard and Armstrong. They even go to desperate measures and propel down a cliff!
Vera greeted General Macarthur and he made her shiver. Once she got to the dock, as she overlooked the water, he mentioned that it was a good place for waiting and it was his time. This left her dumbfounded.
As Blore and the gang go up to the attic where Mrs. Rogers is laying peacefully they hear footsteps above, and are sad to see that it was only Mr. Rogers.
Chapter 9
General Macarthur was found dead by Dr. Armstrong... He got a blow to the back of his head, and was out immediately.
The great debate of who killed who has already begun and Justice Wargrave seems to be handeling the situation quite well.
Chapter 10
Mr. Rogers hatches a plan to catch the killer by locking doors to the kitchen. He then sneaks away to hide in a wardrobe.
Mr. Rogers finds a scarlet oilsilk bathroom curtain missing, but no one else seems to care.
Chapter 11
Everyone left finds a dead Mr. Rogers in the wood shed with a gash in the back of his head from an ax. He was still in the middle of cutting wood when this incident happened and Emily Brent was the one to blame.
Vera has gone crazy on the island, thinking about the poem and Hugo. Dr. Armstrong had to give her a slap so she could come back to reality.
Chapter 12
Emily Brent was the next to go, and was needled in the back with syringe. Mr. Blore followed the trail and found the syringe bottle and broken Indian thrown outside of the window. Whoever did this act must have had to act in a hurry. This plays into the rhyme on the wall saying... Six little Indian boys playing with a hive; A bumblebee stung one and then there were five.
Lombard confessed about having a gun in his drawer, but when he checked it wasn't there. Dr. Armstrong also stated that he had syringe but, when his room was searched it was nowhere to be found.
Chapter 13
Vera gets more and more paranoid as the story goes on. This chapter she went up to her room for a bath with a burning candle, but when that burnt out she could smell the sea and felt a cold, clammy hand touch her. She screamed and everyone rushed upstairs to find that it was just a piece of seaweed hanging from a hook on a ceiling.
While mostly everyone rushed upstairs they didn't notice that Justice Wargrave wasn't behind them. They came downstairs to find him shot in the head wearing a scarlet robe from the bathroom and wig made out of Emily's yarn.
Chapter 14
Cool night air filled the room as Blore became suspicious about the sounds he was hearing from outside of his locked door. So he decided to wake up Lombard for help.
Vera was in her room thinking about Hugo and Cyril again, while she heard noises all over the house, including the sound of breaking glass. Blore and Lombard said that Dr. Armstrong must have vanished after breaking through a glass window.
Chapter 15
The survivors tried to signal help using a mirror, but that was no help. They also realized that staying out in the open would be the best decision if they didn't want to get killed.
Blore dared to go in for lunch and came out of the house set up perfectly to be killed. A bear shaped marble stone was dropped on his head from Vera's room, and he was immediately taken down.
Vera and Lombard decided to get to higher ground, but are distracted by clothes they see under a giant rock. As they get closer they notice it was really Dr. Armstrong!
Chapter 16
Vera wants to move the body and before you know it she has pick-pocketed Lombard and stolen his gun. By this time Vera has gone completely mad and shoots Lombard right in the heart. Feeling no fear at all she walks into the house and takes the last Indian left... the survivor!
She is so tired, that she doesn't realize she dropped the revolver and Indian. Being the insane lady when she walks into her room to sleep, she feels like Hugo is directing her to hang herself on the perfectly set up rope (and chair) waiting for her. She commits suicide and the dying is finished with.
Epilogue
The mystery of Indian Island and ten dead people found has not been solved yet, but Sir Thomas Legge and Inspector Maine have been on the case.
They found that the chair that Vera kicked over when she hung herself was set up nicely next to the wall. If she was the last one to die, how could the chair have been picked up?
Notes from Vera, Emily, and Justice Wargrave were all found on the island too. They got some information from them.
Manuscript
CLIMAX: A message in a bottle thrown into the water was found by Emma Jane, and that letter contained Justice Wargrave's life secret. He said he had always wanted to pull of the biggest mystery and, with the help of Issac Morris(who died from medicine), that was made possible.
Wargrave gathered the victims he wanted by conversations he either overheard, or was apart of. He was truely insane and decided to take his own life just to pull off this murder mystery. He planned for a while, and even made alliances with Dr. Armstrong. By killing the least guilty first, the job would be easy by the end.
Good guess on the climax, but finding the bottle is actually the resolution. That wraps everything up and explains anything that is not clear to the reader. The turning point of the story (climax) is when Judge Wargrave is shot. From then on the race is on to figure out the mystery. Since he was their faithful, trusted leader, there is no one to take his place and everyone is lost. Good job on all of your assignments! Mrs. M

10/22/10 Assignment #2 Due October 22
Put a line above Assignment #1; assignment #2 will go above assignment #1.
Read chapter two.
Choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
With your small group, find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
Each member of your group must write on his or her WIKI page the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
Then, in a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.
Read chapter three for Monday, October 25.
foreshadowing
1. page 24: It was a fantastic moment. In it, Anthony Martson seemed to be something more than mortal. Afterwards, more than one of those present remembered that moment.
2. page 31: Ten Little Indian boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were nine.
3. page 33: There had been something magical about an island---- the mere word suggested fantasy. You lost touch with the world----- and island was a world of its own. A world, perhaps, that they may never return.
4. page 27: Philip Lombard said sharply: "Must be difficult to land here in the dirty weather."
Fred Narracott said cheerfully: " Can't land on Indian Island when there's a southeasterly. Sometimes 'tis cut off for a week or more."
These excerpts from the book are examples of foreshadowing because they imply that something mysterious is going to happen in the near future. Form what I found on page 24, I can infer that Anthony Martson did something horrible or "mortal" in his past. Someone on the same island must know something about his past. I'm concerned that it might come back to haunt him. That moment that he was thinking about must have been a prominent situation in his life. Then, on page 31, I got a glimpse of what is to come. Since they all were just going down to dinner and there are ten of them, it seemed obvious that they were going to die because of causes on the poem. They are all the "little Indian boys", and they are all going to die (at least, that's what I think). On page 33, the book gave another suggestion of the deaths that are to take place. They make the island sound good, but then they mention about never returning from it. This just shows another exmple of the horrible things that are to come. The weather on the island must make it hard to return to the real world, too, or at least that's what is stated on page 27. Just think about it, it would be hard to try to kill ten people in only one week. Who knows? The weather could all of the sudden change (turn bad) and they won't be able to leave. There is much in store for these Indians!
Excellent choice of quotes...and good explanations to go along with the choices. Mrs. M

how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?
how might the title be a clue to the story?
make one prediction - something that you think might happen or something that you might expect about a character in the story.
A narrative is basically a book that is told by one person. This differs from a narrative because it is not just explained by one person, it is has more dialogue in it. Usually there is one prominent voice in a narrative, but with this story you can really hear different voices being expressed. Different people's personalities are coming through, because you can hear their dialogue. The title is a very good clue to see what is to come. Since it has the word "none" in it, I can infer that there will be deaths in the story. The ten victims will probably die of horrible causes, leaving no one left; hence the title And Then There Were None. I think this book is going to have some surprising twists and secrets that may leave me traumatized!
prediction - I think that Vera C., the girls gym coach, will be so haunted by the death of her student that she will commit suicide. Since they all (probably) end up dying at some time in the book, I think she might try to drowned herself.
